"Try Again" is a vocal recorded by American singer Aaliyah, released on March 21, 2000, through Blackground Records and Virgin Records, as the lead single for the soundtrack to the 2000 film Romeo Must Dice, and was after included on international pressings of the vocaliser's tertiary studio cocky-titled album (2001). Information technology was written by Static Major and Timothy Mosley, and produced past Timbaland. The song features an intro in which Timbaland pays homage to Eric B. & Rakim by rapping the duo's opening verse from "I Know You lot Got Soul".

The vocal was met with positive reviews from music critics and enjoyed commercial success. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Hot 100, condign the commencement single to reach number 1 based solely on airplay. In Canada and Europe, "Try Over again" peaked within the top v on 8 music charts, including those of Deutschland, holland, and the United kingdom. It also found success in Oceania, entering the top x in Australia and the top 20 in New Zealand. A music video directed by Wayne Isham was made for the vocal.

Groundwork and release [edit]

In 1999, Aaliyah landed her get-go film part in Romeo Must Die, released March 22, 2000. A loose adaptation of William Shakespeare'south Romeo and Juliet, Aaliyah starred reverse martial artist Jet Li, playing a couple who fall in beloved amid their warring families. It grossed US$18.six million in its first weekend, ranking number two at the box office.[3] In add-on to acting, Aaliyah served as an executive producer of the moving picture soundtrack, to which she contributed 4 songs.[4] Aaliyah revealed that the production team "really talked about the soundtrack before we even shot the pic".[5] "Try Once again" was recorded at Sound on Audio Studios in New York and it was originally written every bit an inspirational song.[6] According to engineer Jimmy Douglass it was "written to inspire young people, but Barry [Hankerson] heard it and told them, 'It's got to be virtually dearest." Composition [edit]

"Try Again" is a song written by Stephen Garrett and Timothy Mosley, and produced by Timbaland.[12] Timbaland's fuzzy, booming soundscape is influenced by acid house. Yahoo! Music formally known as "Launch" mentioned that the song's sound is associated with Detroit techno.[xiii] Aaliyah'south sinuous singing comprises elementary vocal riffs, which are repeated and refracted to echo the manipulated loops that produce the song's digital rhythm. The chorus line, "If at first yous don't succeed, then dust yourself off and try again", is hypnotically repeated in a manner similar to the sampling and vocal manipulation found in house music.[fourteen]

According to Music Notes, the song is composed in the key of C minor and is set in time signature of common time with a tempo of 92 beats per infinitesimal, while Aaliyah's vocal range spans from G 3 to Chiliad 4.[12] In the song'south intro, Timbaland pays homage to Eric B. & Rakim by interpolating the duo'south opening verse from "I Know You Got Soul".[fifteen]

Chuck Taylor from Billboard felt that Aaliyah had another boom striking on her hands and he praised her vocal styling proverb "Aaliyah's sultry vocals slide all over the futuristic beat". When it came to the production of the song he had a mixed response to it, although he thought the synth sample and snare alternating lived upward to expectations for the vocal he ultimately felt that the synth sample becomes grating as the vocal progresses.[16]

Chart functioning [edit]

"Try Again" debuted on the Us Billboard Hot 100 on the calendar week of March 18, 2000, at number fifty-eight,[17] reaching number ane on the week of June 17, 2000.[17] Information technology besides peaked at number one on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, number iii on the Mainstream Top forty chart and number four on the Hot R&B Singles & Tracks chart.[17] On the Year-End chart for 2000, the vocal reached number twelve.[eighteen]

In the United Kingdom, "Effort Again" debuted and peaked at number 5 on the U.k. Singles Nautical chart on July 16, 2000―for the week ending July 22, 2000―while staying in the top seventy-five of the chart for twelve weeks. The vocal has sold over 209,000 copies and information technology is Aaliyah's best selling single in that region.[19] [20]

"Try Again" besides accomplished commercial success elsewhere in Europe, peaking within the top v on the charts in Kingdom of belgium, Netherlands, Kingdom of norway, and Switzerland.[21] In Germany, the song peaked at number v on the German language Singles Chart.[22]

In Commonwealth of australia, the vocal reached number viii on the ARIA Singles Chart.[23] Information technology became the country'south fifty-first best-selling vocal of 2000.[24]

The music video was directed by Wayne Isham[25] and It begins with Jet Li inbound a hall of mirrors and Aaliyah stepping in, wearing a revealing low-cut bra and tight depression-rising leather pants, Timbaland is as well shown. The room is dim with a shallow puddle and circumvolve calorie-free in the middle to resemble the moon shining over the ocean represented by said pool.

The music video for "Try Again" made its official television debut on MTV during the week of March five, 2000.[26] On the week of March 12, 2000, the video debuted on the cable network channel VH1.[27] Meanwhile, on the week of March 19, 2000, the video debuted on The Box, the post-obit calendar month later during the week of Apr three, 2000, the video debuted on the BET network channel.[28] [29] During its chart run the music video for "Effort Again" received heavy Goggle box airplay on multiple music video count down shows. For the week ending on May eight, 2000, the video was the number i most played video on BET.[thirty] On MTV the video was the third most played video on the network during the week ending on May 22, 2000.[31]

"Try Again" was the first vocal ever to reach number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 based solely on the forcefulness of its radio airplay.[32] "Effort Once again" was nominated for a Grammy Accolade for All-time Female R&B Vocal Operation at the 43rd Grammy Awards,[33] while its music video won two MTV Video Music Awards for All-time Female Video and Best Video from a Film.[34] The vocal was likewise nominated on the 7th annual Soul Railroad train Lady of Soul Awards in the category of Song of the Year; however, Aaliyah lost to gospel artist Yolanda Adams.[35]

"Effort Again" was featured on Billboard 's Hot 100 Songs of the Decade listing at number ninety-eight,[36] while appearing at number eighty-six on the Rolling Stone list of the 100 Best Songs of the Decade.[37] The song was likewise ranked at number xviii on Rolling Rock's xx Biggest Songs of the Summer: The 2000s list. [38] On Jan 31, 2005, Pitchfork Media ranked the song number 30-seven on its listing of the Top 100 Singles of 2000–04.[39] Complex Magazine ranked the single 43rd on its list of the 100 Best Songs of the 2000s, while it finished 60th on Slant Mag's Best of the Aughts: Singles list.[40] [41] In September 2011, VH1 included "Try Again" in their list of 100 Greatest Songs of the 2000s, placing it at number 65.[42] The Village Voice 'southward Pazz & Jop annual year-end critics' poll ranked "Endeavour Again" at number ten to find the best music of 2000.[43] British publication The Daily Telegraph ranked try once again at number 42 on their 100 songs that divers the Noughties list.[44] Yahoo included "Try Once more" on their 15 Chart toppers that didn't suck (2000'due south edition) list [45] In March 2020 Billboard ranked the song at number xiv on their "The 100 Greatest Songs of 2000" listing.[46] George Michael sampled "Try Again" in his 2002 hitting vocal "Freeek!".[47] German language NDH band Knorkator covered the vocal in their album Ich hasse Musik. In 2013 Dr. Danny from The Mindy Project taught the choreography of the video to Mindy in an episode of the serial.[48] [49]

On Baronial 21, 2019, the Madame Tussauds Las Vegas revealed a wax figure of Aaliyah. The lifesize effigy was modelled on Aaliyah'due south advent in the "Try Again" video. It was unveiled by Rashad Haughton to an invited audience.[50] [51] [52]

2021 rerelease [edit]
